There are two steps to protect your whatsapp if it is hacked
Make sure you have the Sim card with the number your WhatsApp account was registered.
If you are using a new Sim but have registered with an old number which you haven't used in a long time(say a year), there is a chance that the service provider has allotted that number to someone else.

If this is the case then I highly recommend you to delete that account from your WhatsApp setting and register with your updated number or you can also transfer the account to a new number (if you already have the old sim and planning to discontinue it).
If you have the sim with you and think that your WhatsApp is still being used by someone else. Make sure you are using the official WhatsApp downloaded from their website or directly from App Store.
WhatsApp have updated their security, and hence one number can be registered to only one device. If it is registered somewhere else they will automatically be logged out. And there is no way someone else can register with your number without having the number since WhatsApp sends code to the registered number then only can you register.
First of all just backup all your data on whatsapp and then move the folder WHATSAPP to micro SD and then uninstall the app and reinstall it but before reinstalling it, place back the whatsapp folder to internal storage. Your whatsapp account is safe.
Now follow these methods to keep your WhatsApp account safe.
1) Lock WhatsApp
WhatsApp doesn't offer this feature within itself, you can always get 3rd party apps that let you lock the app with a password or PIN. It will prevent anyone from being able to access your WhatsApp chats even if they have access to your mobile device.
Lock for WhatsApp (WhatsLock) is one such app for Android, you can download it from the play store.
2) Don't share your phone with strangers (prevent IMEI hacking)
WhatsApp associates your account with your phone's IMEI number, which is unique to every single mobile device. It is quite easy to fetch the IMEI numbers from any phone, one simply has to dial *#06# and the IMEI number is flashed on the mobile screen.
3) Block installation from unknown sources
This one is a must do in any case as you wouldn't want to take the risk of downloading an unverified, scrupulous app on your device, much less let someone install a hacking tool on your device. You can easily do this by going to Settings > Device Security.
4) Avoid using WhatsApp on less known WiFi
A lot many hackers are able to hack in while you are using less secured WiFi connections to access your apps, including WhatsApp. So, ensure that when in a public area, stay away from using a public WiFi connection to access WhatsApp.
5) Be careful of your communication over WhatsApp
The best option is to use WhatsApp with a bit of caution, and stay away from sharing highly important information that you want to safeguard, over WhatsApp, as much as you can. They say prevention is better than cure.
